Chapter Thirteen
The mingling scent of musty law books and stale office coffee did nothing to help Katie's nerves as she sat in the waiting room of the law office. It had only been three weeks since Mark’s death, but it felt like a lifetime ago, and just yesterday all at the same time. Alternating between worrying her hands and pacing to the window and back, she wondered why she was so nervous. This meeting was purely a formality. Mark had no family left, and as his wife, everything would go to her. Except maybe his motorcycle. He would never have allowed her on it. He had always said she was too ‘delicate.’ That was just fine with her, frankly. She’d hated every time she’d seen him climb on the oversized hunk of metal. The idea of riding it herself turned her stomach to knots. Leaving her everything but the motorcycle would just be another way for him to ensure that she would always remember his dominant presence and the loving way he had cared for her.
“Sit down, honey. You’re making me dizzy.” The magazine in Keith’s hands was steady as a rock, but he’d been on the same page now for almost ten minutes and that, more than anything else, betrayed his own nervousness. She idly wondered what he had to be nervous about.
“I can’t Un—umm… Keith. I just want this over with.”
“You’re not going to make it happen any faster by pacing,” Rose interjected. “Listen to your Uncle and sit down.”
There was no one else in the waiting room. Even the receptionist was off doing something else right now, but Katie still felt awkward using or hearing the titles in public. Heat flushed her cheeks. “Yes, Ma’am,” she answered as she quickly obeyed. The last two weeks she had relearned that as fast as Auntie was with her hugs, she was even faster with her spoon. When she spoke, immediate response and obedience was the best course of action. As soon as she settled into her chair, the receptionist breezed back into the room with a smile.
“Mr. Stark is ready for you now,” she announced.
Nervous hands brushing at the front of her shirt, Katie stared at the lawyer’s open office door until, exchanging looks between them, Keith offered her his hand and Rose did the same. They all went in together, but though Rose gave her both a smile and a comforting squeeze of her fingers, something told Katie that nothing was going to be the same after this.
